Took a quick trip up north from the windward side of the island only to find the 2012 IBA Pipe Challenge... This was my first trip exploring the various breaks between Sunset and Waimea and it was firing; enough to even intrigue and awe the lesser invested co-pilot.

Fourth day of doing nothing but sitting on a couch eating pills. Luckily I have a dog and the Internet to keep me company all day. Unfortunately, almost every web-video I find of places that I like is made by boogers, SUPers, or ignoramuses. I do not get the boogie board thing... SUPing requires a lot of skill, and is pretty damn fun when its flat, mushy, or small. Whereas boogie boarding is something any 7 year old or overweight middle aged woman could do...

I spent my off days wisely...

The only downside being that I was nearly crushed by a large and unruly beach log.... I got washed ashore while trying to get out (so I could run back up the point...), only to see a huge ass tree (truck tire diameter?) being sucked straight toward me down the beach. I couldn't exactly turn and run, so I put my hands on top of it (while it was rolling) and crawl/jumped over it. My board and leash got tangled, and I was dragged a bit more before escaping. I laughed it off at the time, but the more I think about it now the sketchier it seems. When Logs roll through the lineup you should probably just get out for a minute...

After another three months on the coast, I spent the last couple of days working and wandering through Makah Days.

They all just saw that clown lady.

If you like tie die shirts, things made from animal parts, fry bread or salmon, then you will LOVE Makah Days!

This summer has been an adventure to say the least. Lots of great memories and new friends. Thanks to the Makah for all the friendliness, free gym, and slow service at the Warmhouse.

How come all my explorations lately end in near disaster?

Getting to the island (which is supposedly filled with goats) was easy enough despite the 1-mile hike over large jetty boulders. Just don't look down into the 15 foot death holes between the rocks... Last time I tried to get out to the island I was with my girlfriend, and kept exclaiming "Wow, look at that death hole! That would SUCK to fall into." After about twenty minutes she declared the trek unsafe, and we left.

I walked around the island and made it to a nice looking trail which I thought would take me back to the jetty. Instead, it slowly deteriorated into a sticker-bush-hell-hole that ended at this look out thing. If there were goats on the island, then they were doing a terrible job of removing the invasive thorny plant species.

I was not looking forward to the hike back, so I moved quick over the rocks. I could taste the warm Rainier that was waiting for me in my truck. Of course, halfway down the stupid jetty a large rock decided to do the shuffle when I stepped on it, and I did a slow ungraceful backwards-tumble-slide into a crevice. My backpack helped break my small fall, but I ended up upside-down and wedged between two boulders, staring into the boiling water of a death hole 10 feet below my face. I quickly wiggled back up to freedom, covered in scrapes from the seagull poo encrusted rocks and made my way, slowly, back.

I have decided to stop exploring places for awhile.

Sometimes you come out to the coast and its :

- windy as hell

- rainy as hell

- flat as hell

Other times your girlfriend/boyfriend/wife/partner/manslave doesn't think its very fun to:

- drink beer in a tent all day

- take bets on rez-dog fights

- drive for hours checking every spot

- listen to you play the stupid ukulele

When these things happen just go to the MUSEUM! Its a fun place to kill a couple hours, buy trinkets and learn about history junk!

A lot of their tools were pretty damn amazing.

I eat cereal every morning out of a bowl just like this...

On whale hunts they would harpoon it, attach floats made from seal skins, and then one gnarly dude would jump in and sew the whales mouth shut. I would not want to do that.

The Dangers of Surf Exploration

Some beaches require a boat to get to. I learned this the hard way a couple days ago, when I decided to bush-whack into a beach that had no trails. I didn't go in totally blind though, I had done my homework by looking at maps, satellite imagery and shoreline photos. Feeling quite confident that I would easily work my way down to this beach (which would of course house the next cold-water-pipe), I grabbed a hundred feet of rope, a machete, some water and put on my boots.

Lets call this spot mushrooms, both because of the plethora of mushrooms in the forest above the beach, and the massive penis looking rock in the water behind it. My entrance to mushrooms started great. I hacked into a large open forest that gently sloped towards the water. The only challenging part was that everything was dead and rotten. Sometimes you would sink up to your knees in decomposing logs and litter. I eventually got to a creek, which I assumed would end at the ocean. I followed this for a ways watching the sides of the creek grow around me like mossy cliffs.

The creek came to a halt at a bunch of fallen logs and I couldn't see any farther. The creek itself turned into what looked like a slimy-grey-slate-slide, begging to be slid down. Because it would have been completely impossible to climb back out, and I couldn't see where exactly I would slide too, I decided instead to climb out of the creek to see how close to the ocean I was. It was a good thing I didn't slide down the creek because when I got to the top I realized I was sitting on a pinnacle of rock about 300 feet above the ground... I was looking straight down this fucking thing, and it felt like the world had fallen around me (I despise heights). Wasn't I close to the ocean? I swear I could hear it, like it was right there in front of me... I promptly shat myself and started carefully crawling back the way I came, feeling like this whole finger of rock was going to collapse into the ocean.

I eventually emerged back on the dirt road from my trail of death covered in sweat, rotten wood and arachnids (which I like even less than heights). My heart didn't stop pounding for about an hour. Time for a beer...

Salamanders and Slabs

Met a photographer from National Geographic yesterday. He was waiting in the marina to take pictures of the golden eagles for the magazine. Its funny because he had a bunch of shots (albino black bear article) in the Nat. Geo. that was sitting in my truck. He has also has had cover shots for Nat. Geo (Think bear eating flying salmon). He gave me some tips (what the hell is a neutral density filter?) and showed me some rad pictures. Cool guy.

Stayed in PA for a night at the cheapest possible motel. This was it. Even though it was only $45 it was a treat to have a TV, a bed, running water, and not have to sleep in the back of a truck.

This place has crazy potential. I have actually surfed it twice thus far this summer. Smallest most perfect left barrels ever. Wonder what the big winter juice makes it do...

This is another little slab (which is a lot bigger than this picture makes it look since I was a hundred yards away when I took this). Zero access with any non-minus tide and a long hike along sketchy rocks with dead smelly sea lions (well, half sea lions...) laying around. Kydakarabbits area.

On the way down to this spot (more famous for its right) I saw a cougar. Actually, I scared it and it ran off on the gravel road. The thing was fuckin huge, scary, and beautiful. The left is pretty rad, pretty shallow, and just plain pretty. Speakin' of pretty, here is my new dog LUCHA.

Start of the Summer

Been in The Bay for a few days now. Today is the first time the sun has began to burn through the murky layer of clouds that always sulk around the cape. Been surfing a bit, mostly down south where it gets pretty legit at low tides... I will probably surf there this evening as well. Forecast looks dismal for here (unless you trek South), so I will likely be in LP on my days off.

No pictures because I don't have a camera, although I did just purchase a new DSLR that I will get at the end of the week. Stoked! This year is supposed to be "the biggest pink year ever", according to one crunchy old fisherman. I need to bring out a smoker, as I plan on catching a lot of those silvery bastards.

Grays Harbor 94.7 FM: "Westport, WA - The Coast Guard assisted the 48-foot fishing vessel JB which ran aground on the south jetty at Grays Harbor, Wash., at 1:45 a.m., Monday. Coast Guard Sector Columbia River received the distress call and coordinated the deployment of a Station Grays Harbor 25-foot response boat and 47-foot motor lifeboat crews, and an Air Station Astoria MH60 Jayhawk helicopter crew. The Station Grays Harbor crews arrived on scene at 2:12 a.m., and removed the two personnel on board from the vessel. The fishing vessel JB was then taken into tow and pulled from the jetty rocks en route to Grays Harbor, but began taking on water and sank in 15-feet of water. The vessel is outside of the navigable waterway and is reportedly not causing a navigational hazard."

Spring Break Journal VIII - OR days

My last few days of break were spent relaxing on the Oregon coast.

The weather ranged from sunny and windless, to pounding raining and 50 knot winds...

Shorties. This place was the least shit when compared to all the other spots I checked. The crossed up swell actually made some super fun headhigh double-ups. After surfing in WA for a week, its nice to have a level, gravel, paved trail down to the beach.

Gnar wind ruined everything for a day.

This place sucked the whole time I was here. I would love to see it cranking...

I came back home to April snow. Really?

Overall it was a pretty damn good trip. I only spent a couple days in OR, but I decided that I like WA better... There is nowhere to hide from big winds or big swell down in Oregon. Up north however, there is somewhere to go on pretty much any wind direction, and ANY swell size. The bigger the better actually...

Spring Break Journal VII - 101 South

The time had come for me to make the migration south via highway 101. I was fine with the long drive, because my body was sore as hell from all the hiking,surfing, and car sleeping...

Lake Crescent is pretty legit, and its water clarity makes Hawaii look like a muddy creek. It also has some unique trout species, one of which was going absolutely nuts over the mayfly hatch.

Ruby beach and Kalaloch are the only places you get to see the ocean for hundreds of miles. This is a stark contrast to Oregon, where the 101 winds right above the crashing waves. Makes you think about all those points, bays, reefs, and slabs that are totally inaccessible...

Westport was big and dirty. No takers...

The waitresses thought I was crazy when I pointed out that the roof was leaking onto my table. This guy over here just told me the roof was leaking, Ha! When I looked around I saw that there were leaks dripping everywhere, and they didn't bother placing pots beneath them. It wasn't even raining...

The morning looked clean, headhigh, and fun. But by this time I was only a couple hours from Oregon's infamous point, so I jammed out south.

It takes about 15 minutes or so to walk back up the point. I was out there solo this morning, so during the walk I watched set after set of empty headhigh perfection peel for hundreds of yards...

The copious amounts of kelp would make this wave a problem.

So stoked when I found this beach glass. Perfectly round and blue. I will sell for $200.

Loads of sick waves, but the bottom isn't exactly forgiving...

Getting to this beach requires a one mile hike over what scientists claim are "the slipperiest rocks in the known universe". After an hour I was over it, and headed to other more well known spots...

Spring Break Journal III - Day of Rain

I killed time by taking way to many pictures of raindrops, puddles, and other crappy stuff that never looks good...

By late afternoon it filled in a bit, all the other people (there was only 1 other guy) checking it had left. I figured I couldn't get any wetter already, so I got in and had a pretty damn fun 3 hours or so to myself.

Looked here earlier in the day. Don't ask me why I didn't get in.

This guy made the worst waves ever look pretty fun as the day ended. There was no sunset, it just got dark.

The rez-dog pack circled my truck and eventually went to sleep underneath it for the night. Good to see this one make it through the winter, although I think some of the others may not have...

Even though the weather was totall shit, it was still a pretty fun day overall.

Its funny because I wouldn't have gone out even if there weren't 20 longboards, funboards, and SUPs in the water. Also, the waves were better in the San Juans the day before...

I always drive through this sand bar and wonder if I should get in. But by the time I have driven that far I just keep going...
